We saw a gap in how people do wine tours. You basically have two choices. You can take a tour on a bus with many other people which will restrict where you can go, or you take a limo, with a driver who may or may not know very much about wine. What we are offering is something better than either. It is a small guided tour, (between 2 and 6 people) that can be customized to go anywhere that you would like, or you can sit back and enjoy as we take you to our favorites.
What we have discovered is that while most people go to wineries around the valley, there is actually a second set of wineries off the beaten path, or in the surrounding mountains. Many of these are people's homes, which make very small batches of hand-crafted wines. Even on the busiest days, as we retreat into the mountains or back-roads, you will discover hidden wineries that don't exist on the maps. This is what we consider the "idealistic" Napa.
©2007 Max Napa ToursWith our tours, we don’t follow a set schedule and go to the same places every day like most other companies. Instead we rely on a pool of over one hundred different wineries, and as the day goes on, we can tailor the tour as we learn which type of wine you like. The day is customized as we go, so you can stay anywhere as long as you would like and don’t have to worry feeling rushed to make the next winery appointment on time. On the other hand, we can always plan a day out in advance if you have specific requests.
We do our tours in new Ford Expeditions, complete with comfortable leather seating for six, rear climate control, and privacy tinting. Larger vehicles can also be arranged.
The small size of our group enables us to go to all types of wineries; from some of the most nationally known and premiere establishments, to places so small that we will be tasting wine in their dining room or back porch. You can observe the entire wine making process, from the vineyard to the bottle. We pick up from over 250 hotels within San Francisco, and then depart for wine country via the Golden Gate Bridge. Tour length is about eight to nine hours.
Sonoma is considered the birthplace of American winemaking. Its historic town offers visitors a beautiful plaza, and the surrounding wineries offer geographic diversity. Because of the dramatic landscape and less farmable acres, fewer wineries were established here, connected by rural roads crisscrossing the valley.
Today, the main varietal grown in the valley region is Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines tend to be softer and simpler than their Napa counterparts. Up until thirty years ago, Zinfandel was king. As San Francisco grew exponentially following the gold rush of 1849, large amounts of wine were needed to support the population, since it was isolated from the rest of the country.
Vineyards were planted with “field blends” of more that one type of grape. The big seller was Claret, which basically meant the wine was dry, red and full-bodied. Other popular varietals of the day were Sangiovese, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, and Nebbiolo. Many of the vineyards from this time are still field blends, meaning that many Sonoma Old-Vine Zins are not actually 100% Zinfandel.
MaxNapaTours is now able to ship your wine home to you! At the end of the day, leave your wine with us and have it delivered to your door. Most States are between $30 and $45 per case.
